Procedure:
Step 0. ~Soak the tamarind in a cup of
water and set aside for 15-20 minutes and extract the juice.
~Finely chop
tomatoes.
~Coarsely crush
the garlic, pepper corns and cumin seeds
Step 1. Heat oil in a pan, add mustard
seeds and allow it to crackle. Add the dry red chillies and asafoetida.
Step 2. Add the coarsely ground garlic,
pepper corns and cumin seeds mixture to the pan and fry for a minute.
Step 3. Add the finely chopped tomatoes
and cook until the tomatoes are mushy.
Step 4. After the tomatoes are cooked,
add the red chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder and salt. Cook for
a minute.
Step 5. Add the tamarind extract into
the pan along with 2 cups of water and the cooked toor dal.
Step 5. Turn off the heat when the rasam
starts to froth on the top.

Simple and easy rasam!
